Pagadut facilitates seminar on values integration
wwffredwayne1982 on 07/26/2009 at 5:22am (UTC)
“Values education should be designed to translate values from abstract into practical,” opens Natividad Pagadut Ph.D. of De La Salle University in the Seminar on Values Integration held in Sabangan Parish Seminar Hall on July 10- 11, 2009.

Pagadut hails from Kiangan, Ifugao, became a teacher and a principal for years. She finished her Masterate Degree on Scriptures and soon gave lectures on values formation using the scriptures around the globe.

She used the scripture of James 3 when she emphasized that “not many of you shall become teachers.” She added that what teachers do, do not do, and what they should do has lasting effects on students.

Values such as discipline and concern for the poor are ineffective unless they are internalized and translated into action. Values should be modeled for the students for these are not simply taught but caught and unless the students claim they have learned, teachers haven’t taught.

Pagadut further stressed the Christian philosophy about human as body-persons, loving, historical, unique but social, free but responsible, rational, made to God’s image and likeness, co-creators with God, fundamentally good, and brothers and sisters in Christ.

“Therefore, we need to know and understand our students while treating them as humans so to reinforce or redirect their values effectively,” she ended.

School library acquires new books
wwffredwayne82 on 07/08/2009 at 9:55am (UTC)
In able to provide better opportunity for students to learn the sciences, 300 units of new science books were acquired by the school library on July 8, 2009. Purchased are 75 units each of General Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics books.

“Teachers were pushing for the purchase of new books especially for the Sciences and English in the past two years, but because of budgetary difficulty we are able to realize this need only now,” said Rodolfo M. Pepe, Jr., school principal.

Since the school population continues to increase positively, there is experienced scarcity of information resource materials. “We are grateful that the Phoenix Publishing House generously agreed to supply us with the books in a pay-later arrangement,” he added.

In response, the science teachers felt satisfied with the decision of the administration to purchase new books. “It would now be easier for both teachers and students to discuss and understand certain topics,” exclaimed Ezel B. Piclet, Biology and Chemistry teacher. “Lesser time will be consumed since instead of writing all notes in the chalkboard for students to copy, most of the significant information can be directly found in the book. We can move faster with our lesson,” she added.

Said books are expected to be distributed to students by Monday.

School hires new teachers
wwffredwayne on 07/04/2009 at 3:12am (UTC)
Nothing in this world is permanent but change.

This is true even for an institution like San Alfonso High School. Three new mentors were hired by the School to replace former teachers who left for better opportunities to serve like Lesio P. Gao-ay who now acts as the principal of Holy Rosary High School in Kayan, Tadian.

Formerly an Officer-in-Charge for eight years in Guzman Institute of Agriculture and Technology, Baras, Rizal, Leticia Obsid, 45, comes to teach Mathematics subjects. She is a native of Banao, Bauko and finished her Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Mathematics in Baguio Central University in 1993. She is now the adviser of
Second Year – B.

Erwin Uden, 23, is a seminarian in his second year of theology in Saint Vincent School of Theology who accepts to teach Religion subjects in his year of regency. He is from Poblacion, Tadian and he is in Sabangan to also assist Fr. William Bilag, Jr. in the parish. He has the maxim “The greatest loss…the lost of self respect.”

Juliet Tiwaken is a Physics major graduate of Benguet State University in 2007. She was born on July 18, 1987 in Tublay, Benguet, his mother’s place. His father is from Tadian, Mountain Province. She says “Just understand and love individual’s intellect.” She handles Sciences I and IV and is the school librarian.

“Although the students need to adjust again with the change of their teachers, I expect that they will learn more from new experiences and knowledge their new mentors may share to them. It is time also for me to minimize my teaching load to maximize my time in my administrative functions,” says Rodolfo M. Pepe, Jr., school principal.

Teachers who re-contract with the School are Joan O. Ramel, History and TLE teacher; Edna G. Licayo, English teacher; Ezel B. Piclet, Science II and III teacher; Winfred W. Felimon, Filipino teacher; and Chester S. Cosape, computer teacher and technician. Licayo, Piclet, Ramel and Felimon are the First Year, Second Year A, Third Year and Fourth Year advisers, respectively.

Survey seems insignificant, school population increased by 7.3 percent
wwffredwayne on 07/02/2009 at 2:42am (UTC)
The feasibility study conducted by the school in 2007 fearing that student population within five years will only be around 100 could be possibly insignificant when the monthly enrollment of SAHS this June has incredibly increased by 7.3 percent.

As of June, monthly enrollment has surprisingly reached 233 compared to last year’s 215 enrollees.

“The enough slots for the Educational Service Contracting (ESC) grant for our school would be one factor of the continuous increase,” suggested Rodolfo M. Pepe, Jr., school principal. “Secondly, parents believe that the school can provide the necessary educational skills needed by their child.”

He said that slots for new freshmen are based on the number of first year ESC grantees in the previous school year. Since the promoted second years are 72, then same number of slots is ensured to the new first years. However, four first years are still needed to fill the available slots.

Fr. Manny L. Samonte, then School Director, observed that students of the school are decreasing in number so that the enrollment can’t augment the school’s financial needs. He consequently requested the principal to conduct a feasibility study with the number of graduates from the feeder elementary schools for the next five years. Results show that school population will rapidly decrease and that by year 2010 enrollees will only be 125 students. If the trend of enrollment will prove the survey, the former rector was proposing the closure of the School.

In reverse, first year population this school year is 68. Second year, Third Year, and Fourth Year levels have 75, 51 and 42 enrollees, respectively. The expected percentage of graduates from the four feeder school namely Sabangan Central School, Sabangan Elementary School, Lagan Elementary School, and Supang Elementary School has increased yearly since the survey. More students from other places like Gonogon, Upper Sabangan, and Baguio City are enrolling in SAHS.

“The School is now making more adjustments so to meet the expectations of students who entrusted their future to our care,” said Pepe.

Administrators appraise brigada eskwela
wwffredwayne on 06/30/2009 at 9:10am (UTC)
“The Brigada-Eskwela done in our School might be the first of its kind in a private school, but such endeavor before the opening of this school year is an awe-inspiring success!” exclaims school rector Rev. Fr. William Bilag, Jr. after assessing the Brigada Eskwela that was held from May 25-29, 2009.

“It could not have been done without the bayanihan spirit extended by the PTCA and the Alumni. I am glad our parents are most supportive to all endeavors to beautify our school. Remarkably, they are the ones who suggested the bayanihan,” added principal Rodolfo M. Pepe Jr.

Significant improvements after the 5-days voluntary work includes repairs of the benches and tables, cleaning of the garbage pit and the comfort rooms and the construction of the flower bed in front of the School. A part of the fund used was from the payment for the cleaning services extended by SAHS students during the 2009 Gagayam Festival held last March. Also, cements, sands and steel bars used in the flower beds were donations from generous parents.

More repairs and improvement of the facilities were also realized this month such as new blackboards, cabinets, tables, and benches and platforms.

Parents and guardians who were absent during the bayanihan will be fined as agreed during the PTCA assembly last March.
