Mentors join lesson planning workshop
wwffredwayne on 05/19/2009 at 6:01am (UTC) | | Two School mentors were sent to the 2009 FAPE-ESC/EVS Summer In-Service Training on 2010 Secondary Education Curriculum and Understanding by Design (UbD) for Fourth Year teacher in English, Mathematics, Science, Filipino and Araling Panlipunan. Physics teacher Ezel B. Piclet and Economics teacher Winfred W. Felimon joined in their respective subject areas.
Initiated by the Department of Education in cooperation with the PEAC (FAPE) Secretariat and the University of Baguio with the theme “Teaching for Understanding: the UbD Method”, the InSet Program was held on May 8-10, 2009 at the Romulo Hall, Teacher’s Camp, Baguio City.
“The objectives of the seminar were - to discuss what teaching for understanding means, discuss DepEd’s adaptation of UbD in RSEC (Refined Secondary Education Curriculum), Identify DepEd’s draft of RSEC Content and Performance Standards, to describe the stages in the FAPE Learning Package (LP) which reflect teaching for understanding and to point out the LP integration of the UbD framework,” shared Felimon when asked about the purpose of the seminar.
“Many significant considerations and reminders were emphasized by the speakers this year about lesson planning, most especially with the implementation of the 2010 RSEC. Lessons so as to be worthwhile must result to an enduring understanding by the learners measured not only on content standards but more on performance,” he added. Before a student finishes high school, he is expected not only to know ‘what’ but also to do ‘how’ and that he must posses the necessary skills to help him become more competent and productive to the society. “Lesson plans must therefore consider enough enrichment activities to help students acquire enduring knowledge and skills,” Felimon remembered the speakers saying.
Using the LP format in lesson planning which are Introduction, Interaction and Integration, planning with the UbD requires the teacher to identify first the Enduring Understanding or the Big Idea which the lesson must instill to the mind of the students. The EU or the Big Idea is that kind which does not leave the memory of the learner for longer years even after leaving school studies. Real understanding will only be attained if students learned with adequate performance-based enrichment activities which combined learning styles and addressed multiple intelligences and that are practical. For instance, questions used in the activity should elicit prior knowledge of the learners. Different forms of interaction like interaction with peers, teacher, material, community and self must always be present. LPs should also focus on interactive programs and simulation Websites which give immediate feedback to student actions. Most importantly, evaluation of projects and activities must be with the use of authentic assessment tools like rubrics, portfolios, journals and articles.
“Our speakers in the Social Studies group, Dr. Mussolini Yap and Dr. Alex Mauricio, keeps emphasizing that creative planning through the use of lesson development will help teachers lead students to acquire life-long understanding of the knowledge they want to impart, especially when they’ll develop better learning packages integrating Understanding by Design. No teacher can teach without planning first!” said Felimon.
“However, most teachers in the seminar remained unconvinced to make use or to develop their own learning packages.” Felimon observed that some complained it will be time consuming especially in the preparation. Making of learning packages will become a burden to teachers especially for those in small private schools where each teacher makes six to eleven preparations but will only execute them once. Also, since it will make the teacher more of a facilitator than a lecturer, they heard some comments of parents and students that they are not teaching or doing their job.
“But at any rate, I myself believe that enhancement in the art of questioning, reading and writing, learning with technology, assessment of learning and values integration must be pursued by all mentors in the development of lesson plan, no matter what format they are following or how big or small their school is,” he concluded.

Brigada eskwela, inaasahang maipatutupad

VELASCO, LAMPAC BAT FOR STRONGER PUBLIC SPEAKING
Teodoro C. Natino II on 09/16/2008 at 12:05pm (UTC) | | SABANGAN, Mt. Province - Some twenty five student-campus leaders of the San Alfonso High School participated in seminar workshop on parliamentary procedure to hone their skills and deliberative decision making held at the school’s library last September 9.
The seminar workshop on the proper ways and means of conducting a meeting or group deliberation was initiated by the students Spirited Society of the school.
Theodore M. Velasco, the local Legislative Staff Officer of the municipality was the second resource speaker. In his lecture, Velasco explained that parliamentary procedure is a body of generally accepted rules, customs and practices employed to regulate the proceeding of any deliberative assembly. He added that a deliberative body is any group of persons which must decide on an issue after due deliberation or discussions. An example of the such body is the local Sangguniang Bayan, Congress of the Philippines or even just a school organization or club, Velasco said.
Accordingly, the success of conducting meetings and come up with a decision depends largely on how well methodologies of parliamentary procedure are applied to any issue or business on the agenda. This includes the observation and adherence to established norms of ethical behavior especially with respect to the kind of words or language used.
“I am glad that I was invited to be the lecturer in this seminar most especially that I can see the interest and motivation of the students. I hope that such interest will be enough to fire up their efforts to become parliamentarians,” Velasco concluded.
In a similar occasion, Municipal Executive Secretary Juanita L. Lampac delivered a lecture on toast mastering to some 22 student-leaders held last September 3 at same venue.
The seminar-workshop exposed the students on the basics of oral communication which are necessary in the art of public speaking.
According to Ms. Lampac, toast mastering aims to empower individuals to achieve their full potentials in becoming effective public speakers. She ended saying that people can only truly improve their public speaking skills by actually speaking in front of others regularly.
As a result of the two activities, the students formed two organizations, the parliamentarians and the SAHS toastmaster club to sustain students’ interest in these two areas.
