Lakbay-aral ng mga guro, sinakatuparan sa Bohol-Cebu
Builder's Desk on 09/19/2011 at 9:30am (UTC)

Fourth years attend two recollections
Arnoldine A. Sally on 09/19/2011 at 9:29am (UTC)
Better relationship with God and with classmates provides students wider perspectives in life.

To attain this, the fourth year class attended two separate recollections. The first was held at the St. Joseph Seminar Hall, Poblacion, Sabangan on September 16, 2010 then in Teng-ab, Bontoc on March 4, 2011.

Fr. Marcial Lloyd Castaneda facilitated the first recollection. He emphasized two important things in the session, participation and silence. He said that recollection is an opportunity to recall everything that matters to us in life. Remember our strength and weaknesses and to thank God for whatever he deserves to be praised.

Also, Fr. Marcs taught the seniors the value of being selfless rather than selfish, so as to be childlike than being childish. Part of the activity given to them were construction of poems from one word, making phrase describing God, and learning the song Metanoia, which means ‘conversion of hearts.’

Fr. Abaňo reminds vicariate teachers
Arnoldine A. Sally on 09/19/2011 at 9:28am (UTC)
Fr. Ed Abaňo, assistant parish priest of Sagada Mission and a Recollection Facilitator, reminds vicariate teachers of their important role as teachers in molding the young to become a better person during the Vicariate Teachers Recollection held in Teng-ab, Bontoc on June 10-11, 2010.

“Life is not about competition,” said Mr. Winfred W. Felimon when asked about what they were taught in the Activity. “God shows to us what life is. He shows us compassion and understanding by being a forgiving Creator. Life then should be about compassion and understanding.”

“As teachers, we are ought to be always compassionate and understanding amidst any problem with the youth of today. By being compassionate we should always give people second chance, to always forgive and forget, and to pray for people especially the students,” Mr. Felimon added.

Fr. Abaňo said that letting people know “they can do it” should be one of the prime mission of teaching. God has given every individual their own talents and it is the very objective of teaching to help bring out the goodness in every child.

“Remember that teaching is a vocation and is always regarded as the noblest profession. Live therefore like real teachers who chose the vocation not just because they are not fitted in other professions but because they value the example God has shown to us,” Fr. Abaňo said.

SSS leaders join Tongtongan, VYE

Because exposures and team building activities are important for the development of leaders, school youth ministers were sent to participate in the 2010 Tongtongan and in Vicariate Youth Encounters.

SSS President Lyndon John Siw-ang, Youth Ministry Chairman Kurt Wanas Klyde Peningeo and Altar Ministry Chairman Verlyn D. Ayodoc joined the 2010 District Tongtongan held in Teng-ab, Bontoc, Mountain Province on August 6-7, 2010. The event’s theme is “Strengthening BEC’s through Collaboration.”

While they have actively participated in all the activities during the Tongtongan, they learned that an organization can only be a better group when there is collaboration and proper division of labor among the members. “We were also introduced with the principle of System Thinking, which suggests to people that even they may be acting as individuals, they are still members of a small or larger system. We must then be responsible to whatever acts we do since everything has impacts to others and to the community as well,” said Mr. Winfred W. Felimon, SSS adviser and participant to the Tongtongan.

In the Vicariate Youth Encounter that was held at the St. Joseph Seminar Hall in Poblacion, Sabangan on September 10-12, 2010, more or less 25 SAHS youth leaders were sent to join. Three Youth Ministers from each mission station in the Vicariate arrived in Sabangan to participate in the said event. Since Sabangan is the Host, more youth were welcomed to join the event. Verlyn Ayodoc and Ivy Cayabas were also sent to join another Vicariate Youth Encounter in Banaue last January this year.

The activities provided insights and trainings to young leaders how to facilitate a larger youth activities or encounters. The participants are being prepared to become future facilitators in the vicariate youth encounters.

Fourth years name Mr. and Miss Marabukini
Arnoldine A. Sally on 09/19/2011 at 9:27am (UTC)
What happens when real men wear sexy dresses and walk like real ladies? RIOT!

Seniors Jonathan Mercado and Purple Gonzaga were crowned Mr. and Ms. Marabukini during the Christmas Party held at the school quadrangle on December 22, 2010. Marabukini is an invented term usually said to someone for being funny or for fun (sa kantyawan in local term).

There is wild and loud roaring among the audience when Jonathan Mercado, Darrel Bangilan and Jude Mercado starts to ramp and dance clothed with sexy women dresses. Pearl Gonzaga, Purple Gonzaga, Jenny Omero, and Lara Palangchao added the fun with their excellent modeling and talents.

The search was conceptualized and directed by the beauty experts of the Senior Class, Lyndon John ‘Linda’ Siw-ang and Kevin ‘Kumbasa’ Galleo. It has the same format with common searches. Contestants did an opening number or production number, showcased their casual attires and answered in the Question and Answer Forum.

After the program in the quadrangle, the class played and enjoyed dancing the pattong in the covered court.

SAHS studes ‘hate’ math-science, NCAE/NAT shows
Builder's Desk on 09/19/2011 at 9:26am (UTC)
The SAHS students are one with the rest of Filipino learners who is shouting “I ‘hate’ mathematics and science.”

Latest result of the National Assessment Career Examination (NCAE) participated by the Senior students in August 2010 and of the National Achievement Test (NAT) taken by the present Junior students in February 2010 shows an alarming Low Average (LA) and/or Low Mastery (LM) in Mathematics and Science.

The Assessment Examination given to fourth year students measures five areas. First is the General Scholastic Aptitude (GSA) which is includes Scientific Ability (SA), Reading Comprehension (RC), Verbal Ability (VA), and Mathematical Ability. Second is the Technical Vocational Aptitude (TVA) that includes Clerical Ability (CA) and Visual Manipulative Skills (VMS). The third group, Entrepreneurial Skill (ES) comprises Planning and Decision Making (PD), Budgeting, Marketing and Forecasting (BMF), and Creativity (C). The Exam also includes Non-Verbal Ability (NVA) and Logical Reasoning Ability (LRA).

The percentile rating of the students’ standard scores in each area are categorized as: Excellent (PR 99+), Very High (PR 98-99), Above Average (PR 86-97), Average (PR 51-85), Low Average (15-50), Below Average (3-14), Poor (1-2), and Very Poor (0-.99).

Result shows that the average rating of the Senior Class is Average (PR 51-85) in all areas except in Mathematics and Science where their Average Rating is PR 45 and PR 39, respectively. More alarming, while the girls performed better in the Exam, the boys are only Average in RC, VC, and PDM and Low Average in the rest of the areas.

For the National Achievement Test (NAT), students are evaluated in areas Filipino, Mathematics, English, Science and Araling Panlipunan. Performances in each subject can be Absolutely No Mastery (0%-4%), Very Low Mastery (5%-14%), Low Mastery (15%-34%), Average Mastery (35%-65%), Moving Towards Mastery (66%-85%), Closely Approximating Mastery (85%-95%) and Mastered (96%-100%).

While the junior girls are Average in all areas, the boys showed Low Mastery in most areas especially in Filipino, Mathematics and English.

“This should serve as a challenge to the teachers to be more creative and responsive to the learning needs of the students. As mentors in a private school, we must not be comfortable with these exam results,” exclaims Principal Rodolfo M. Pepe, Jr.

“Because more and more youth today are lazy to study and mostly hate to prioritize learning valuable things, it is the most difficult part on the teachers and likewise parents/guardians to encourage them become a better learner. Everybody, including the community, must be concerned to where our youth are leading today,” he added.
